carried out throughout the world has shown that ALWC
can be prevented by the use of Cathodic Protection (CP).
It has also been shown that CP can halt attack.
However, the choice of repairs or preventative installations
will be affected by the layout and use of the structure.
In a badly affected structure there will probably be
the need for remedial measures for structural or usage
purposes in addition to the consideration of the ‘killing’
of corrosion cells.
A key feature of any work, particularly post construction,
will be access. This must be considered not only from
the question of reaching the structure, but also the
levels to be reached and the visibility when underwater.
Divers will be an obvious option initially, but difficulties
of visibility, tidal currents and inspection mean that
even the most experienced divers cannot guarantee the
quality of observation and work that direct dry access
