ALWC (Accelerated Low Water Corrosion)

NJM have Considerable experience in the investigation and repair of Accelerated Low Water Corrosion. The following pages are designed to give specific information on a variety of aspects of the phenomenon.

BS 6349 Part 1 Maritime Structures (revised in 2000) section 7 materials, (particularly clause 5.2.2) defines Concentrated Corrosion as being ‘local’ and ‘accelerated’ corrosion in relation to ‘normal’ sea water corrosion. The BS considers ALWC as one type of concentrated corrosion. But the prevention of all types must be part of the consideration of the safety and cost of construction and repair of structures.

See British Standards Institution

To illustrate the importance of the corrosion phenomenon, it has in the past contributed to the loss of two thirds of structural design life before major maintenance. The affects have been known about since certainly the 1960s, but structures have been built, and may still be being built, without adequate consideration being given to prevention. There is now no need for the structures to be damaged by any of the corrosion mechanisms, if sufficient informed advice is sought and implemented.
